Is it really true that something like this can't happen with bitcoin?

I read the OP with so much annoyance in me because it made me think back to those days when I had to pay huge money for just transferring my money to a broker abroad, it could be around $50 charges, which I do for less than $1 now. We can't compare the minimal errors, transparency, fast time of completion and the rarely high transaction fee of Bitcoin to the regular opposite with the bank. I just don't like to think back on the extorting experience of banks, thanks to Bitcoin even if there are some issues, it's forgivable.
I often €100 is the fee charged there, this is not usually common with bitcoin although on some occasions when there is congestion we get this kind of fees but not right now. A $1 will get your confirmation into the next block if it is one input one output transaction
Very correct, even at the congestion time, you may see huge charges as €100 equivalent in 3-4 years. I only witnessed higher than it a few minutes or hours after halving this year. But in normal conditions, even with congestion, the charges are still lower than $25, and if you are good with the Mempool, you might do it lower than $5 during the congestion period.
