I was very confident that, at the end of the day, Madrid would win against LOSC Lille. When they even let in a goal in the first half, I still thought Madrid would come back now and hush their rivals with a big score because, usually, they do exactly this. They have extraordinary star players.
But until the match ended, as it emerged, Lille had played with a lot of confidence even under pressure. Not only did they defend, but they also developed their game starting it back in their line. What's most surprising is, after having key players returning in the second half, Madrid still couldn't capitalize on their chances. It was disappointing to see them not manage to turn the results in a game, actually, of all games in this one Madrid usually leads at the end. A poor result, and unanticipated.
Real Madrid were basically favorites to win the match, but in reality they had to accept defeat for several reasons.
The tension in the match was very high and this has triggered Real Madrid to play a little more aggressively than Lille. Real Madrid committed more fouls and received more yellow cards in this match, but this is not a reference to why Real Madrid lost. The thing I emphasize here is that Real Madrid is following Lille's playing pattern which should not be like that.
This kind of defeat is good for Real Madrid and its fans who are overconfident as if Real Madrid is invincible. Lille proved that nothing is impossible to beat a top team, the same thing happened to Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Milan. However, Barcelona's performance tends to be better than Real Madrid so far in the Champions League, of course because of the goal productivity between the two.
