He was fast, smart, highly skilled and scored a lot of goals which is what was needed to win the balon d'or, if you ask me, the only reason why Neymar hasn't won the balon d'or is because of the competition he had to go against and the fact that apart from the quality that Ronaldo and messi had, they were liked by the majority of people.
