Those who lie because they don't have money left, all wasted in gambling, they will try to create some money out of making stories like they lost it somewhere, or they were robbed by someone. Those are a green signal a person is a gambling excessively.
I think they cannot control those emotions because they are letting what happened to them to be the factor on how they will react on everything. A little mistake will be bigger for them when they lose, and a little fun could be laughable to them when they win. To sum it up, it's not normal anymore.

Lend him the money he needs, or pretend you don't have any money and don't interfere in his life (don't stop him, ignore him so he can have the freedom to gamble). Or will you lead and treat him out of this gambling addiction?
