Once it fails maybe unlucky for a player, but in fact he has failed a few times before in scoring goals through penalties, so I think Ancelotti needs to rethink Mbappe role as a penalty kicker at the moment, the fans disappointment has been huge towards Mbappe, especially since he is indeed unreliable when Madrid have to play in a crucial match so far, regardless from the penalty failure, so far he has not been able to show impressive performance in Madrid as he ever showed at PSG, but strangely Ancelotti seems to have like no other choice but to continue playing Mbappe although he actually has many other options in his squad.
I can't find the exact statistics about all penalty takers, but as far as I remember, Mbappe has never been among the best in taking penalties. His ratio is rather average, but I get the point why Ancelotti wants him to have some moments of success. He wants Mbappe to finally gain the confidence he needs to go for it and decide games by himself.
Mbappe is holding back, not taking the 1 v 1 situations and if he does, he looks to lethargic. Everyone is aware that Mbappe could be the new Real Madrid icon, but he lacks something that someone like Ronaldo had from day 1. I don't know what it is, but Real Madrid is somewhere in between being a great team and being a team that has evident weaknesses. Injuries do the rest.
The season is far from over of course, but I think Barcelona has some more resources to pull from over the course of the whole season.
