Read some books, mate. Any customer-oriented business "exploits addiction" to something. Food joints exploit your addiction to food. Producers of alcohol drinks exploit your addiction to alcohol. Book publishing companies exploit your addiction to books. Game creators exploit your addiction to gaming. ... Well, as I said, read some books.
You are right with your point of view. The business will usually study the human desires and develop a model based on it. If there is addiction (addiction can be termed as a extreme need of something that provides entertainment), the business will develop strategies to provide solutions to fulfill their needs.
All the industries work like this whether it be food industry or even Alcohol and Tobacco related products, they all exploit the addiction to run their business. If the people don't have high desires why would they spend money on gambling ?
