Keeping yourself busy is one of the best ways for an addict to distract themselves from gambling. They can find a hobby that they enjoy, or do work, or do other activities that keep their attention away from gambling. Because the problem that gamblers often face is that the urge to gamble arises when they are not doing anything
You're right being busy with something can actually keep you from gambling abit but not necessarily on a very solid ground base, cause at this point little things can intice the gambler to keep gambling but I think having indulge oneself to another hobby could also remedy the gambling addiction rate of the person, cause instead of gambling they find themselves doing another thing that brings fun to them.
One needs to be aware though, there are some hobbies which could have elements of gambling infused in them without us noticing at first glance, there are people who move onto videogames to fight boredom and keep themselves out of casinos, but there is a little problem: the video game industry how it stands today have mechanics like micro transactions, gacha games, loot boxes, etc; which are very similar to gambling (because of the randomness involved and the small chance of getting a very rare item valued in hundreds or thousands of dollars).
So, for example, I would not advance a recovering gambler to move onto games like Nikke, Counter Strike, Hearthstone, Pokemon TCG, etc, where he would find himself spending money in order to get the chance to get the best of the items available in the market.
