So for long long long term I am inclined to believe (whether actually true or not) that community is more likely to endure.

But trying to build community on business I suspect bottom line is going to win over community which I suspect could be a large part of my leaning toward free open source and grass roots over commercial endeavours.

The driving force for the XRP is its community as they are loyal to the project both in good and bad times. With the current US administration, XRP community and holders would benefit in terms of price and not in terms of technology.

Building business on community though seems to work, I look at things like Red Hat (Linux) for that, the community (Linux) might outlast Red Hat but...

But here XRP isn't truly as decentralized as Bitcoin. While Red Hat may be one of the best package of Linux, you cannot say that XRP is the best among the altcoins in term of technology-wise. The Bankers and the centralized financial institutions may enforce XRP adoption but there is a difference between adopting by force and adopting naturally like BTC.
