<snip>...sometimes it can be frustrating to be in situations in which sex might be ambiguous or even someone refers to themselves or even another person as a "they.".. .. which truly can be irritating for me when a singular is being referred to as a plural, unless it was meant to be a joke..
indeed...i was reading a book recently and the heroine was referring to her little boy as "they".
For a few seconds i could not figure out who were those people (i thought it was obviously a multiple)...and then it occurred to me; 'they" meant her son.
Oh, well.
