But apart from that there are a bunch of cryptocurrencies that can be merge mined by bitcoin miners. For example you can see names of some of them in this mining pool's support page with the reward miners can get: https://support.viabtc.com/hc/en-us/articles/7207416775951-What-is-Merged-Mining
There is also some bitcoin side chains that can be merge mined similarly like RootStock https://rootstock.io/mine-btc-with-rootstock/
Which is another much better idea the "arbitrary data spammers" could pursue instead.
