I agree that its the enemy of progress but there are circumstances like lack of opportunities that make people idle
Another one is physical maladies and depression, but if you are capable and have a goal to achieve, then you have to take action.
Motivation is a big factor for people to take action, and if they are in a surrounding, where there are a lot of activities and support, idleness will banish, as idleness will have no place on one's mind and body if there are activities.
