You are right to be concerned and if I bought Ethereum, I would be worried too. Let's see it this way, Ethereum is not the first altcoin, it snatched that spot due to its better scalability, but it made the mistake of being expensive. Now, we have many alternatives to it with better speed, scalability and also very cheap. This caused people to look away from Ethereum and the projects linked to it and it's evident with how blockchains produced thousands of tokens yearly but Ethereum hardly produced any. For this, it can't perform better as before nor rival Bitcoin again, it may only try.
