How are they (you) being careful if the executive branch has an absurd, illegal amount of power? When in any of human history has a group of people gained real freedom by letting an authority figure have raw unchecked power?
That's a good question. The answer is in what they do. Let them clean up the bad, and when they turn bad, get rid of them.
