I would contact ledger, return this device and ask for a refund, than purchase alternative open source hardware wallet (trezor, passport, keystone, jade, etc.)
But I think it is to late for return after you opened this device and voided warranty.
I am not sure he will get a refund. More likely that they will want to send a replacement device. We have heard of Ledger sending new devices to complaining customers without asking them to return the defective product before. But that only happens if the previous device was already used. In OP's case that's not what happened.
But if he came up with a believable story and told them that his wallet started going mad after he already sent some coins to it, perhaps they will buy it...
