Is it that people are just pretending to be gambling for fun meanwhile everybody (all gamblere) are actually gambling for financial gains.
every story of addiction always have it beginning and often time, the beginning does not look like what can potentially lead to addiction. from just playing on the team you support, you might along the line decide to one one more games and then another and then the journey continues till you discover that you are just like the regular sports bettor that plays his bets across the different leagues including the ones he is not all that familiar with. certainly we cant say that someone cant be disciplined to the extent where he only focuses on just a single game, it is very possible and for that individual, it is rear for him to become addicted if he only plays just a single team. the other issue he will have to deal with is the choice or sort of bias that comes with playing that your team is going to lose to a certain team, if care is not taken, that might be the source of most of his losses.

addiction is addiction whether you got addicted by gambling for fun or just by chasing after your losses. the root out is just never to gamble what will get you wrecked if you lose the bet. if you cant fix that up, then you wont just be addicted but will end up regretting ever gambling at al.
