A 200-level Chemical Engineering student just lost his life for partaking in a bet in an attempt to swim across a river. the condition is that if he is able to swim across the river, he gets about $0.3 which is equivalent to about 300 naira. as a typical Ijaw man, i understand how this works and usually, during swimming in the creek for fun, a lot of bets goes on ranging from bets on who can last longer under the water to who can swim across certain rivers even with zero safety measures in place.
It sounds very silly, but in reality there are people who do crazy things like this, Usually teenagers who always make trouble like this, make bets that can take their own lives, the money earned is not worth the safety of their lives. There needs to be firm action, because this kind of bet can certainly involve many people, the impact is troublesome
You know I'm not even against the bet, because I know this can't stop people from engaging themselves in such activity. But before going for such bet they need to ensure that those safety tools are in place, so far as it has to do with water that should be the first thing before they will think of any other thing. But it was quite unfortunate that they were unable to get those tools available before going for such bet. I think that's so ignorant of those participant for not telling the host to keep those safety tools available for them should incase of any emergency.
