Girona's performance this season has really plummeted, leaving them in 13th place in the standings. Even though last season they were very superior, finishing in 3rd place in the La Liga standings, who knows what's wrong with Girona, but that's how a team like Girona can't be consistent every season.
This draw is certainly very much hoped for by Espanyol considering that in this match they were actually not dominant in terms of ball possession or other aspects, they were only able to take 8 kicks, only 4 of which were on target. This is different from Girona who managed to release 18 kicks, only 4 of which were on target, but their goals were scored from the penalty spot. This draw also makes Espanyol slowly move away from the relegation zone, currently they are only two points behind Alaves who are in 18th place in the standings.
Espanyol played quite well overall, they tried to give their best performance for their supporters, with a counter attack strategy Espanyol even managed to score first at the beginning of the second half. Girona, although appearing more dominant, found it quite difficult to penetrate Espanyol defense, they were lucky thanks to a penalty at the end of the match. In my opinion, the match was quite entertaining, with both teams playing aggressively.
Girona has indeed experienced a significant decline in performance this season. Perhaps no one expected that they, who finished in the top four last season, are now struggling in the mid table. I think Girona management made a big mistake in the transfer market. Meanwhile, Espanyol still has to work hard to stay out of the relegation zone. Securing full points when facing fellow mediocre teams, and chasing draws when facing more dominant teams, could allow Espanyol to stay in La Liga next season.
