Giving chances to young players is OK. But what happens to these youngsters in the long run? They are given a few matches, and then they get forgotten. The PCB doesn't have a system where young players are properly groomed. The team remains overdependent on senior players such as Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah. Name one young player, who emerged during the last 2-3 years, and has a permanent spot in the playing XI. There are none.
PCB's biggest problem is that they give too much importance to bilateral series. Of course bilateral series are important, but that doesn't mean you play only to win the series. You have to think about the future and give opportunities to young players. They depend on experienced players to play series against any team. They can take help of different leagues to give opportunities to young players and to improve the skills of experienced players.
When foreign leagues start, they can test young players by giving opportunities to their experienced players in foreign leagues. Those who pass the test should be made regular in bilateral series so that competition starts between young and experienced players for the national team. This competition will force a player to improve his skills and create creativity among young players. The most important is the domestic league. If the quality of domestic league is low, your cricket structure is weak, in this case it is challenging to improve your cricket and find young players.
This is not only for the PCB but every cricket board have to think ahead as how they are going to take the team further and where they stand. The cricket boards need to develop a talent in such a way that the existing talents stays within the team while the new talent develops at the same time. This can be done by making some tactic like giving new players chances in matches which are against the weak team or sometime if you have already win the series (or loss the series), then you can experiment with new players in the match that aren’t so important. I think Pakistan lacks such tactics as I think there is no shortage of talent with them.
