Gambling cannot affect studies, gambling will definitely affect studies. I think there's a clear difference between casual gambling, and being an addicted gambler.
Of course an addiction will make your studies suffer, but if you simply gamble a few times a year, I don't see how that would affect your studies.
If anything, it might be a way to relax a bit, and come back with more focus to your studies later.
But of course, if the gambler is addicted, then it is bad for the studies.
