One bitcoin is quite a lot for someone new to, although it depends on him having the money to buy it.
I agreed with the question because he probably wasn't that knowledgeable about the security of storing bitcoin and I don't even store bitcoin in one wallet.
Electrum might be a good choice, although I don't intend to recommend it to anyone as so far it has been pretty safe to use for me.
I'm glad to see someone new understand security measures because I'm sure he's being thorough enough to get involved in investing and most people don't think about it and are completely unaware of it.
