Kudos to you on what you said here, why will a country that is producing their own things be worried about tariff hikes? The problem here is just that the overdependency on US made products by many nations is getting out of hand, countries should learn to make their own economy better by producing their own needs instead of always looking for importation all the time. If tariffs are hiked by the US and majority of the countries pays less attention to it, believe me, no US government will ever think of doing such a thing like this again in the future.
For example, China is considered the world's factory and is the most populous country in the world. But why can't they consume domestically to reduce their dependence on exports (self-sufficiency), why do they still have to depend on the US? Easier said than done, and the world economy is much more complex than we imagine.
Likewise, the United States is the world's leading consumer nation, they rely on imports, they hardly produce anything themselves and are largely dependent on supply chains in Asia. Trump wants businesses to come back to the US and goods to be made domestically instead of relying on China. But do you think they can do it? I bet you that will never happen and the US will continue to depend on Asia.
