or get yourself a hardware wallet at once.
but my hardware wallet was not there. Had to transfer funds from hardware wallet to metamask and lose large gas fee
Although you can connect hardware wallets to platforms where it supports, but hardware wallets are used to store large amounts of crypto, bitcoin for example and if you would be needing it for trading purposes, it is better to keep those funds in an exchange account or in an online wallet. If you want to transfer funds without large fees, then you must target when fees are low and move what you might be needing soon to an online wallet or exchange.

Connecting your hardware wallet anywhere may undermine security of the funds stored in them, you may be lucky you didn't succeed connecting  it to the platform because although it is considered the safest, connecting it to other platforms might expose it to security vulnerabilities like firmware exploit or other forms of social engineering attacks. You may end up thinking it is unsafe while it was your actions that undermined its security.
