If you’re an active trader and do this on a regular basis, participating in such events won’t hurt — it might even bring some fresh motivation to your trading. The main thing is to make sure these events don’t lead you to change your strategy or cause you to end up with losses instead of profits. 
However, if you're participating solely for the prizes, that's generally a bad idea — you're more likely to end up at a loss than with any meaningful gains.
