So this left me to ask the question does statistics really work in football or it just a coincidence that it happens
Yes or course, statistics/History do work when it comes to the game of football, because despite football being a game of both skills and luck, there are actually some set of people who truly understands the tips and tricks of succeeding in football, just like Pep Guardiola who won the English Premier league for 4 consecutive times, simply because he understood the game of football, spotting the best players (i.e Attackers, defenders & mid fielders) and buying them all to his club for his advantage, not minding how much it will cost the club, inasmuch as he knew fully well with these players he is likely to win the trophy. So it's obvious, that would have been the strategy Ange Postecoglou adopted, which made him believed he could win the Europa league title which he eventually did for Tottenham Hotspur this season.
What happened to Pep Guardiola and Manchester City this season? They turned out to be one of the worst teams in the Champions League and they are struggling to qualify for the competition next season. Sports like football are not like mathematics or science experiments in which the outcomes are predictable. A coach can acquire all the best players in the world and adopt the best strategy yet still have poor performance. Ange Postecoglou was just fortunate to win a trophy this season because Tottenham was one of the worst teams this season.
