Winning stage
Losing stage
Chasing/desperation phase
OP, I think the addiction thing begins with the "chasing stage" rather than the "losing stage". The "winning stage " is well out of it to the best of my perspicacity, anyway. If a gambler loses and doesn't have the mind for further losses, they will give up and that ends the chase. Those who don't like taking losses because it reminds them of failure are the ones who go on chasing their losses in order to take a revenge and by do doing most of them get hooked on it. That's how addiction sets in. They want their own pound of flesh, forgetting that no gambler has a winning edge on betting houses.
Losing stage can also make someone want to recover their losses. But the reality that he will meet is he lose for more but can not accept it. Some people will not stop their gambling activity instead still gambling and hope they can win in the next rounds.
Actually, that may be a sign for them becoming addicted to gambling without they realize and if they still gambling, they will surely addicted. The reality is hard to accept for them and not make them realize that is wrong to still gambling in a lose situation.
Sooner or later, they will addicted to gambling. Once that is happen, they will ruin everything they have and even their life.
