Lazio and Milan both finished the season ahead of Bologna in the standings technically. But none of them has managed to qualify for a European tournament while Bologna are going to the Europa League. 
It's a funny thing, where other teams who are ranked higher won't even play in European competitions. I can also say that Bologna was lucky, because they should not have won the Coppa, before the final match, AC Milan managed to beat them with a big score. It was completely AC Milan's fault in the final match because they underestimated their opponent. There have been so many surprises happening in Italy this season, it's really confusing with all of them
