Football statistics work but I think in a slightly different way not like in your example with the Tottenham coach. In his case it was just a promise he made and kept. If he had not won the same tournament twice in a row he simply hoped to do it and he managed to do it in the Europa League. I believe that in the context of gambling statistics should be evaluated as indicators of a specific team's attack or defense performance head to head meetings with other teams and many other similar statistical indicators.
