I see more and more crypto holders around me and most of the people I know hold their coin in an exchange never made any on-chain activity.

I really don't think retail investors has lost interest, instead we just don't have proper access to the data to determine the real number of retail investors in the market.
Pretty much everything is speculation in regard of retail investor's statistic, even on-chain data isn't too reliable to predict the stats.
