History
On this day 6 years ago, one of the biggest transfers in history was made and Chelsea reached an incredible and an insane deal with Real Madrid. Chelsea reached an agreement for Real Madrid to sign Eden Hazard for €100 million and an insane condition that will make Real Madrid to pay Chelsea £5 million each time they win a trophy. I still wonder how Real Madrid agreed to such a clause in his contract before signing him, this is what desperation gets you in my opinion. That signing was a waste of money for Real Madrid because Hazard was of no single benefit to the team in all the years he spent there.
But you are suggesting that Hazard was not a world class player, but the contrary is true.
What clubs sometimes can't see coming is an endless list of injuries. That was the case for Eden Hazard and if that didn't happen, he was certainly among the top three offensive midfielders in the world. If he remained without injuries, he would have been a ballon d'Or candidate without a doubt.
I think if you look at decisions retrospectively, it is of course easy to say it was a waste of money. Obviously it was in hindsight, but when Hazard peaked, there were good reasons to justify that transfer.
Imagine a club would now pay €150 million for Yamal and right after he joins a new club, his body is going against him, knee injuries etc. Would it be a waste before the fact is known? I don't think so. Hazard's injury list ended up being insane, nobody could anticipate that.
When Real Madrid signed him, he was at 85 goals in 245 games as an offensive midfielder and that doesn't count the assists. Too bad it turned out that way for him. Real Madrid will get over it financially
