While growing up, it is common to see young men going to learn technical or vocational skills in Nigeria. They will become apprentices in mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, vulcanizing, and other skills. If you go to this workshop, you will see many youths there learning skills.
These days, the number of young people who are learning this handwork has reduced drastically. These workshops These days are somehow empty and you will see mostly men in their forties and fifties.
I was discussing with a mechanic today and he told me that the youths are now focused on online jobs. He said many of the apprentices who came to learn skills dropped out. He claimed that most of them are impatient and want quick money.
He claimed that these youths are now focused on G and Naija bet. I don't know how true his reasons are. How you reason am?
Most of our youths are blown away by the flashy things they see on social media, they don't even want to consider the hardwork that most of this celebrities put in order to get to where they are right now. And because of this social media influence some of our youth wants to blow overnight and they believe that the best way to achieve quick success is y venturing into digital skills, that is why when someone joins crypto and does it for the first few months and made no profit, he would consider getting into another skill(I initially had this mindset, until I was able to conquer it).
Apprenticeship in works like Mechanic, Solar Installation, Welding etc may not be all that flash it may look like a dirty work, but it gives you a real knowledge, one that can never be taken away. With this knowledge you can even use it to feed and take care of your family with ease.
So I really think we need to change the narrative. Learning a skill doesn't make you less handsome or less beautiful, it doesn't even make you less smart. The truth of the matter is that
no be everybody go succeed for online business . So many people destiny lies in learning a trade or a business.
