To Merit more different users, I'd have to read more posts in topics I'm not interested in, which I'm not going to do.
It's not necessarily about needing to read more topics. I think it's more psychological -- we may just lower our standards and find posts that are worthy of merit in the same topics we already read, even if they don't initially stand out.
You have a good point, and shout out to LoyceV. He has responded to many of my posts in agreement, but I'm yet to receive a single merit from him in 3 years. Smiley

This naturally lowers the chances for other posters to get recognized, especially newer or less-known members. I doubt I'm the only one who does this !!  I'm sure many of us subconsciously skip posts by people we don't recognize.
Oh, you nailed it. More reason why people perceive some merit distribution as sentimental, even if the sender doesn't think it that way.
