Restoring 11+ old wallets from pre-2013

Hello. I'm new and have been reading quite a few posts on the forum. I'm having a problem with a seed created with Electrum in 2013. When I try to enter my seed with the current Electrum version, the "next" button doesn't appear, meaning it's not recognized.
I've tried installing Electrum 1.x on Ubuntu 14 (which was released in 2013, if I'm not mistaken), but I've had trouble connecting to the repositories. So, I decided to install Ubuntu 16.4.1 and install older versions of Electrum (1.1 and later), but when I enter my seed, I get the message "I cannot decode this." I've tried replacing the last word with a random one to see if I get the same message, but instead, the message I get is "Invalid seed."
I'm sure I'm writing the words in the correct order and without any typos.
Could it be that when I install Electrum 1.x with the command "sudo python setup.py install" (just as the "readme:" file says), the libraries installed now in Ubuntu 16.4.1 are more current than those from that time, and because of that, Electrum 1.x can't decode?
If anyone could help me with this, I would be very grateful.
