Today we suggest discussing the following:
🚨 Nobitex hack: hackers destroyed $100 million — was it a political attack?

The pro-Israeli hacking group Gonjeshke Darande hacked the largest Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex, destroying crypto assets worth about $100 million. The funds were sent to addresses without private keys — that is, literally “burned”. The source code of the exchange has also been published. Iranian authorities have already restricted the work of all crypto platforms, and Nobitex has acknowledged the scale of the damage and has begun a gradual recovery.

We are a team of blockchain developers, and here are our thoughts on what happened. It would be interesting to hear the opinion of the community:

🔒 How realistic is it to protect against attacks of this scale?
Protection is not only a matter of technology, but also of process architecture. Judging by the leak, Nobitex had vulnerabilities both in its code and, possibly, in access to critical infrastructure. Without a multi-level audit system and cold storage of funds, vulnerability is only a matter of time.

🛡 Why were there no backup mechanisms?
It is difficult to say for sure, but it is possible that they relied on centralized management of funds, without distributed access or multi-signatures. If funds can be burned in a single transaction, this is already an architectural fail.

🌐 Is this cyberterrorism, a protest, or a new reality?
It seems to be all at once. This is a politically motivated attack with a public show of force. Given the trends, such actions may become a new form of pressure between states - especially through the DeFi and CeFi infrastructure.

Join the discussion - the opinion of those who also work in the blockchain is especially interesting.
