If someone has already accepted their gambling addiction and managed to stop gambling, it is synonymous with willpower.

But the paradox is that if you have the strength and conviction to stop gambling, anyone could come to the conclusion: "Why not just control it and that's it, without needing to quit gambling completely?".

Which brings us to this questions:

Is it harder to control gambling or limit it without falling into excess than to stop gambling forever?

Why is the effective strategy not moderation but absolute abstinence?
Well, if you could have been able to moderate it you wouldn't have fallen into the gambling addiction in the first instance. So if you have been able to work on the addiction and finally eliminate and taken control of it and you feel you can't moderate it, then it's best you quit absolutely in you best interest.

I have known some gamblers who left gambling after battling to win themself out of the addiction of it, then later got back after some length of break and they got worse. So I believe in such context complete abstinence is the best.
