This is the difference between someone who is smart with gambling and someone who just resigns themselves to fate. We all make many choices every single day and the most successful people try to emulate the best decisions, applying their learned knowledge in new and dynamic situations. If you are watching the game and see that the major favorites before the game are now struggling, I'd rather take a 3% profit, or even a 20% loss than a full 100% loss on a bet - which is the usual black and white outcome. Most people overestimate their skills and over confidence blinds them to the obvious situation unfolding in front of them. Your friend would be very wise to cash out, because a favorite with that much advantage should have been knocking goals in all game.
