1.) No direct buy-in: Every poker contest here is either completely free or requires a small deposit and wager (1x-2x). If you are gambling anyway, you are just getting a free entry. 1x wagering is nothing and if you win during wagering, it is all yours 
. On the other hand, if you play poker elsewhere, you have to pay your buy-in no matter what, without any chance of getting it back.
2.) No rake: You can not beat rake in poker. All the events here are rake-free. So why pay rake when you can play without it?

Well, I probably wouldn't go as far as calling them profitable, but that depends on who the usual winners are in the poker games.
It is a bit more friendly and community-driven. But the same rules and dimensions apply to any Bitcointalk poker game as they do for any regular online gambling casino poker games.
But you are right to say it's more fun when playing with familiar names from the Bitcointalk forum.
