Gamble is everywhere and mostly in everything we do, but somehow, some form of gambling is called a different name altogether, but it entails similarities to gambling. You are right that in prison, gambling does exist, and as a matter of fact, that is the only means of their major entertainment, as they do that to keep their stay lively and engaged. Although it is mostly violent, aside from what we sometimes see in the movies. Prison gamblers do gamble because they just want to get away from thoughts of the reasons they were in prison. Hence, they look for activities or exercises and engagements that would keep them busy to remember whatever brought them there.
However, research shows that
1. Some males indicated gambling when in prison on sports, games and general prison life using
‘canteen’, ‘toiletries’, ‘vapes’ and money sent in from family members (Prison and Probation
Surveys).
2. Fighting occurred in male prisons over gambling debts (Prison and Probation Surveys) and
professionals indicated sexual violence also occurred to pay off gambling debts (HMPPS Staff
Focus Group).
From the above research findings, it is clear that gambling is also prevalent in the prisons al round the world.
