I've learned that despite winning the cup, Chelsea have not secured a spot in the next edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in 4 years. They have to re-earn the spot.
What's funny is that PSG already earned their spot in the 2029 edition by virtue of winning last season's Champions League.
On a side note, Chelsea are estimated to have earned £85m (~$114m) by winning the competition, according to Sky Sports News, while PSG got £78.4m (~$105m).
It's such a ridiculous situation. If you’ve won this cup, you should automatically qualify for the next tournament. I really think this needs to be fixed.
You win the cup, but there’s still a chance you won’t be in the next tournament, that just doesn’t make sense to me.
The teams that participated in the tournament made very good income from it, maybe even more than they could earn in their own leagues.
I agree with you, no matter the competition, the winner should automatically qualify and have the right to defend the title but this rule, unfortunately, changed a long time ago because since 2002 even the World Cup winner has to go through the qualification stage. The idea behind this change was to ensure that all participating teams would earn their spot playing qualification matches. I can understand this logic but I disagree.
