Now, I’m a father, and my 17-year-old daughter is starting to gamble too playing slots and even doing some sports betting. I don’t know how to feel, part of me feels oddly proud of what she’s doing.

I think that if gambling is commonplace in your community, it's not a problem for your daughter to gamble. Even if she doesn't gamble because you're a gambler, she might gamble because of the influence of her friends, especially if she doesn't hide it from you. However, you need to prepare your child mentally to avoid addiction. Especially if your child eventually earns her own living expenses, you must teach her properly.

Why do we focus on allowing or restricting gambling to our sons and daughters when we know that we can only do counseling and they will gamble (if they want) no matter how hard we restrict them.

There are many examples around us where the children or teenagers are gambling secretly from their parents. Everything is available online no matter how much we try, we cannot stop anyone from gambling. The best is to tell them the pros and cons of gambling and also advise them as how excessive gambling can lead to addiction.
