If you are going to bet on the long shot at all, then you have to have some hope that you will win even though you know the odds make it very unlikely. I have entered some lottery contest on casinos (I don't bet on sports with a potential win that could be that high), and I entertained the possibility that I could win those times.

No one should fall into the habit of doing this often; chasing a big win as a 'get rich quick plan', you'll quickly lose all of your capital before you come close to winning big.
