You can learn something and draw conclusions from almost any situation. But that doesn’t mean those conclusions can always be extrapolated to other situations or protect you from making the same mistakes in the future. That’s why money lost in a particular case may still be lost in vain — even if a person draws a conclusion, it might be too narrow and applicable only to that specific situation, meaning it's retrospective. Such a loss won’t arm you with anything useful for the future.
