You are right, there would have been lots of internal discussions before anything was made public. He could be using a potential move to increase his chances of getting a new contract and force the hand of the club to part with more money. With 3 years left on his current contract that will be very complicated and the club holds all the cards right now.
He can be one of the best strikers in the world and his next contract will hugely impact his future. If Newcastle does offer him a new contract for the amount he is asking, they will lock him down for many more years (Chelsea style)

Talking about Newcastle, the other day i was just seeing them losing agains Celtic in a friendly and when i see the line up i see the same team as the last year, so i thinked to myself " they are gonna again maintain the team and dont buy any big player?" . Or im missing something.
