The Trump administration offers new way for Americans to donate their funds towards reducing the national debt.
Such program existed from before and a few millions have been donated in the last 25 years. But the debt is up to the trillions.

This is a new sign of desperation, using a bill splitting/quick money tip app for the government to accept donations...
If only any administration would be so decisive against inflation too it would be amazing. Instead we only see such things when the government wants help and not when the people need help most.

I'd not say desperation. I don't think the US economy is already such desperate that they need to beg to their own people to pay their debts. If it was the case, they wouldn't be sending money and arms to fund wars around the world even today.
It's rather an interesting way of getting people involved. There are some people that has claimed they'd be willing to pay their share of debt if the nation decides not to take any more of it. But I don't think many of them would actually pay not only because they don't want to but also that it's sure that US would keep taking loans to fund wars in future.
Trump had promised many things in his campaign but is doing exactly opposite on many of it. The Trump Musk conflict might have other reasons as well but one of them were the decision to spend more while Elon risked his reputation trying to cut Federal government spending. There's no reason not to believe Trump would keep asking money from the people and keep getting more loans.
