I believe the reason why Gavin was giving out 5 Bitcoin free was because back then the value of Bitcoin was almost nothing compare to now that the value of Bitcoin is crazy. And some of the people that was dashing out Bitcoin and were using it anyhow are somehow regretting now because they didn't know Bitcoin will be this great and Bitcoin will continue to be great as long as it continue to exist.

Because he said he was looking for more people to get to understand Bitcoin, so he was doing that just to get people's attention to Bitcoin because the price was not big at that time, and he had a lot of Bitcoin,so he felt giving out part of his holding was not a big deal.
