I didn't expect Beşiktaş to suffer such a defeat. Shakhtar aren't weak, but Beşiktaş had a much better chance of winning at home. Unfortunately, they didn't make it this time; they need to play much better in the next match.
Conceding four goals was a real disappointment for them. The squad isn't bad at all, but it showed they're not ready for the season yet
Besiktas ended up 33 points behind Galatasaray last season and I think that was when they had to acknowledge that they are not playing the same ballgame as the domestic top teams do. Now against Shakhtar conceding four goals at home and losing like that was a shock for them. Usually their home ground is the place where they can create the advantage for the second leg or correct the fallout from the first leg if that didn't go well. This was against all expectations and as far as I am concerned, it won't be Besiktas making up for those two goals in the next game. Shakhtar then deserved to qualify. I think qualification round 2 is the last one and whoever wins this, is qualified for the Europa League?
The points difference in the Turkish league isn't significant; it was clear Beşiktaş wouldn't win the championship last season, and their performance was truly lackluster. The title race between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe didn't last long anyway. However, Beşiktaş's failure in Europe is still unlikely. Advancing to the next round is now virtually impossible in next week's match, and Shakhtar will have a much greater advantage
How is the points difference not significant... You either mean that it doesn't mean anything for the Europa League or you mean that it wasn't large, but both is wrong I think.
I mentioned the points in difference in the Turkish league because someone was surprised that Shakhtar did so well and Besiktas wasn't playing well, but I only wanted to bring up that Besiktas is not the powerful team anyway and Shakhtar has problems due to the various circumstances they have to cope with, but they somehow still get their team together and have some great players.
