It's not just a guess, it's truth, the company was named Tesla to tribute Nikola Tesla and it was also marketing-wise too because Tesla is a widely acknowledged name in the world.
Yeah, it was wise for Elon to do that because people can easily remember the name of the brand.
But this company wasn't named by Elon Musk, it was founded in 2003 Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, Elon joined the company in 2004 and then he grew with the company.
To my mind, Nikola Tesla became a victim of business interests. Many people don't love good invention if it doesn't generate money and it kills their multi-billion dollar businesses.
Thanks for the short history of it, I now remember it. And it's true that Nikola Tesla was a proof that even before, there's already a politics related to businesses. The big corporations that are going to be affected by innovation and great invention of these good people won't win against them.
