Governments and authorities have been against privacy and anonymity since the beginning, but before Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, no one ever tried to go against them, and try to have a way for managing their finances that doesn't go through them, and allow them to monitor everything you do with your money. As soon as Bitcoin was created, it posed as a great threat against them, because it challenged centralization and centralized monetary systems, and immediately, it was getting targeted and called negative, a criminal coin, or whatnot.

The reason why most of the governments these days have gave up and decided to finally regulate and allow cryptocurrencies is because they couldn't suppress them after all they tried, people weren't ready to stop using cryptocurrencies against all odds, and they knew it will only make them look bad at the end if they do more, so they decided they will do what the people want only to look good in their eyes, but they are still not in their support, because they allow people to stay private with their finances if they want to.
