Didn't he get any offer from other clubs except Barcelona? For example Bayern Munich got interested but ended up with signing Luis Díaz for even a higher amount than Nico's cost.
He is still 23 of course. But I would rather watch this kind of young talents at the places they deserve. He is amazing you know. He shouldn't waste his most productive years of his career at a lower team...
Nico williams had his heart glued to Athletic Bilbao and the only club he could consider was a move to Barcelona and since the move didn’t happen the only option was staying put with Atletico Bilbao which was what he did. Staying with Bilbao was his decision and he was not forced to stay, probably later in his career we could see him make that move away but for now he is a Bilbao player. I think it's simply a matter of a lower salary, while Athletic Bilbao offers this young player a higher salary.
He's still very young and doesn't have any idea of a career with Barcelona that could win trophies and provide him with incredible experience.
In any case, it was his choice, and I think even if Barcelona fails to land the player, the Barça squad is still capable of facing the challenges this season.
