I would prefer this but you can buy hardware wallet as well if you buy from the original or main source of the hardware wallet rather than buying from another source or from unknown/not reputable sources. If you did then there's a chance that the hardware wallet is tampered by the seller. Using self-custody wallets from main source is much helpful in keeping your crypto safe which you will know since it is an open source wallet provider unlike those close source which may not be safe like trustwallet.
