True story: unwatching a topi is a serious stuff: really difficult, and not consistent over multiple devices .
The only solution, a symptomatic one, is to mark all the messages as read and then hope that they don't populate again.

I was going to say the same thing. You're clicking in the wrong place!
Checking the "Show new replies to your posts" option allows you to see replies made in threads you haven't read yet, but have already responded to. It's a dynamic option that changes as you read the replies. At first, it might seem sensible, but once you've finished reading the most recent ones, some older ones might pop up—if you never click on them, you'll never "officially" read them.
The correct option is "Watchlist." It's a wonderful feature that, when used, allows you to accurately follow all the topics you want.
